Generals announce summer camps

The Waynesboro Generals will hold three summer camps in June, the team announced today.

The camps are scheduled for:

- June 14-16
- June 21-23
- June 28-30

The camps will run from 9 a.m. to noon each day.

The cost to attend is $62 per player per camp.

Fleck, Smith join Generals for ‘10

Kaleb Fleck will be back in Waynesboro to pitch for the Generals in 2010.

The signing of Fleck, who pitched in Waynesboro in 2008 and then last summer played in the Cape Cod League, was one of a series of player-personnel moves announced by the team on Tuesday.

The Generals added another pitcher, Mars Hill righthander Greg Smith, and announced that two players who had signed contracts with the team to play in 2010, Austin Peay pitcher Lucas Anderson and Towson pitcher Spencer Patton, will not be playing this summer. Read more

The effort to find host families for players and coaches for the Waynesboro Generals’ 2010 season is almost complete.

Housing coordinator Beth Tipton is still looking for host families four three players and one assistant coach.

Members of the 2010 Waynesboro Generals will be arriving in town on Tuesday, June 1, at Kate Collins Field.

The team will greet players, their families and host families for the summer at the field in a rolling event beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The ‘10 regular season begins for the Generals on Saturday, June 5, with a game at New Market.

The Generals open their home schedule on Sunday, June 6, against Rockbridge.

Shukri’s takes over concessions

Shukri’s BBQ Co. will run the concession stand at Kate Collins Field for the Waynesboro Generals this summer, the team announced today.

Shukri’s is located at 403 W. Main St. in Downtown Waynesboro.

A full menu of ballpark fare will be announced in the coming weeks.

Generals give back to local high-school baseball programs

The Waynesboro Generals have made contributions to the high-school baseball programs at Waynesboro, Wilson Memorial and Stuarts Draft as part of an ongoing commitment to benefit local youth baseball.

“When we bought the Generals, we wanted to be a community-oriented-type venture,” said Dave Gauldin, who purchased the team with Jim Critzer earlier this year, at an event at Waynesboro High School where the Generals owners presented a check for $500 to Mel Morris, the school’s athletics director.

The team has also contributed $500 each to the baseball programs at SDHS and WMHS.

University of Tampa junior Evan Stobbs will be returning to Waynesboro for another Valley League summer with the Generals in 2010.

Stobbs has a 0.48 ERA in 13 relief appearances for the Spartans in 2010. The righty was an honorable-mention selection to the All-Sunshine State Conference team announced this week.

In 2009 in Waynesboro Stobbs had a 1-1 record in 14 appearances (one start) with a 3.27 ERA with 30 strikeouts in 22 innings pitched.

Stobbs also hit .245 with a home run and 12 RBI in 53 at-bats as a position player for the Generals in ‘09.

Cullen having stellar senior season at Concord

Waynesboro Generals alum Brooks Cullen improved to 8-0 in 2010 with a 4-3 win for Concord against Bluefield State on Saturday.

Cullen, a Wilson Memorial graduate and a senior at Concord, is also hitting .393 with 11 homers and 51 RBI for the Mountain Lions.

“Hitting and pitching-wise, I feel like I’ve learned a lot, and know what to expect. I’ve just improved a lot, all the way around,” Cullen told the Bluefield Daily Telegraph for a story published last week.

Cullen had an 0-1 record and 6.75 ERA in 12 appearances (including one start) for Waynesboro in 2009. He also hit .256 in 18 games (11 starts) primarily in center field for the Generals.
