Surging Generals now hold Valley’s second-best record
Waynesboro (15-10) has now won nine of its last 11 games to take a one and a half game lead over second-place Staunton (14-12) in the Southern Division.
The Generals now have the second-best record in the Valley League behind Harrisonburg (21-6).
Keys to the turnaround:
- Offense. After spending much of the first half of the season at the bottom of the league in most offensive categories, the Generals are now a respectable eighth in the 12-team league in hitting (.256). Two important cogs of late have been Jeb Weymouth (.412, 4 RBI, a team-high 5 stolen bases) and Shane Halley (.318 and a team-high 2 homers in eight games). Weymouth, a sophomore from Randolph-Macon, has had his time limited by a hand injury that he suffered in May at the end of his college season. Halley was a late arrival after wrapping up his season at the College World Series with the University of Virginia.
- Numbers game. Jordan Walton was 5-for-5 in Sunday’s 12-8 win at Covington, improving his team-leading batting average to .364. Walton is fourth in the Valley League in hitting. Walton is also leading the Generals with 16 RBI … Weymouth’s .412 average in 12 games (11 starts) would place him second in the league if he had enough plate appearances to qualify for the league batting title. Weymouth currently has a .524 on-base percentage … The Generals have hit seven homers in their first 25 games. In 2010, Waynesboro hit its seventh team home run on the final day of the regular season. That seven-homer total put Waynesboro 12th in the Valley League. Waynesboro’s seven homers in 2011 puts the team at 10th in the league right now.
- Small ball. Waynesboro leads the league in sacrifice bunts (17) and is second in sacrifice flies (12). The Generals are third in the league in scoring when they have a runner on third and less than two outs (.609).
- Tim Leather. After six so-so appearances out of the bullpen, Leather has been lights-out in two starts in the past week, both against Rockbridge. Leather went seven innings in both starts, giving up a single run in a 2-1 win on June 26 and two runs in a 3-2 win on July 1.

you guys are on fire and making Waynesboro proud. best team ive seen here in years! thanks guys!
THANK YOU GENERALS FOR A FUN WEEK OF BASEBALL. YOU TREATED US TO 3 WINS IN THE 3 GAMES THAT WE WERE ABLE TO COME TO. THE RED SOX HAD THEIR “IDIOTS” OF ’04. KEEP HAVING FUN TOGETHER AND YOU WILL KEEP WINNING TOGETHER. ENJOY EVERY MOMENT OF IT!
New month= Another win over the Braves, another win on Sunday which we are undefeated on and we finally defeat Covington in Covington. Believe me these guys are exciting to watch and there is some stuff we need to fix like winning on Wednesdays, need a win on that date and throwing out runners trying to steal but alot of teams are struggling on that, so if they steal don’t let them score. The season is one of the most exciting I have seen since 2007, our championship year and I would love for 2011 to be a championship year and I know we can do it. Keep fighting and keep believing. GO GENERALS!!
