Generals shut out – again – in Valley League honors
Waynesboro, at 15-10, has the second-best record in the Valley League.
We’re tied for the league lead in a category that you wouldn’t expect.
Fewest kids named to the Players of the Week list.
At zero.
Yep. It’s us, Luray (9-16) and Woodstock (9-18) still looking for our first honoree of 2011.
The tough thing is that the Players of the Week are being done this year on a division-by-division basis. Meaning there are six of them named each week – one position player and one pitcher.
We have the league’s fourth-best hitter (Jordan Walton, .364). Our closer, Andrew Reck, is tied for second in the league in saves (at five, with a 1.69 ERA and 12 Ks in 10.2 IP).
Tim Leather was 2-0 for us this week in three games (two starts), and beat Rockbridge twice, 2-1 on June 26 and 3-2 on July 2, with a two-scoreless-inning relief appearance on June 29 against Covington thrown in for good measure.
(His line for the week: 16 IP, 3 ER, 11 H, 11 K, 2 BB.)
Walton was 10-for-20 with seven runs batted in and a 5-for-5 line Sunday night at Covington.
Oh, and do I have to mention that we won six of seven last week?
In the Southern Division, Staunton has had one Player of the Week so far this year, Covington three, and Rockbridge, currently bringing up the rear in the Southern Division at 12-14, has had four.
Memo to the powers-that-be: We play in the Valley League, too.

I agree 100% with ya. I forgot about Leather pitching twice in 1 week but they put a pitcher that only pitched in one game that pitched only in a DH in Game 2. Walton even misses a few games hits better than a few there on the list, and scores more and has a better line than anyone on the list on one night. Maybe we have to have the cycle with the hitter or a no-hitter for a pitcher and then we will be on the players of the week list, they should have a team of the week too, 6-1 in a week is pretty good too.
GO GENERALS!!
THE GENERALS PLAY AS A TEAM AND WIN AS A TEAM. THE FACT THAT THE GENERALS HAVE THE SECOND BEST RECORD IN THE LEAGUE AND NO GENERAL HAS BEEN HONORED AS PLAYER OF THE WEEK DEMONSTRATES THIS CLEARLY. THEY ARE A TEAM OF WINNERS. THE HONORS WILL COME.
What is wrong with the sound on the game feed tonight? I can barely hear it even with the volume turned up as high as it will go!
I AGREE WITH TIGERMOM. BROADCAST OF TONIGHTS GAME IS THE ONLY THING THAT IS AS ROUGH AS THE OUTING THE GENERALS ARE HAVING. NO MORE DAYS OFF COACH.
Sorry for that. Tonight the game broadcast is the responsibility of the Luray folks since we’re on the road. I’ve heard that the league has had some issues with the Luray broadcasts this year, but I can’t say why.
IT DOES MAKE ONE APPRECIATE THE OTHER BROADCASTS QUITE A BIT MORE. SOMEONE FROM THE LEAGUE NEEDS TO TUNE IN AND REVIEW THE BROADCASTS. TONIGHT WAS AWFUL.
The topic of this team’s broadcasts has come up in conversations around the league. (And specifically in the league office.) The issue is that the league is run almost entirely with volunteer labor. Not defending the guy in Luray, because his broadcasts are … interesting. But I’m sure he’s doing his best.
I was at the game tonight but I know it was hard to listen to the Front Royal vs Luray game Sunday when the Generals at Covington was on a lighting delay.
Last year I missed both games when Waynesboro was at Luray but had a rough time listening them because after a play happened the announcer would say 5-7 seconds after it happened what just happened on play. Front Royal’s broadcast you always have to turn on full blast and its been like that going on for 3 years.
The Luray broadcast on Tuesday nite was the worst attempt at sportscasting I have heard in many years of listening to events such as this. My original thought was that the announcers had a little too much to drink before they reported for work. Then I thought they must be high schoolers but then I remembered that high schoolers do a better job of announcing than that. Awful! Sorry to sound so negative but when you are halfway across the country and use the webcast to keep up with the game it is really frustrating to be forced to listen to such inept announcers.
I know they had four people in the pressbox. I can just imagine how it would have sounded on the internet too. The announcer would call Dykota Spiess “Dykota Spice” each time and we kept yelling it was Spiess like Peace. Errors was said like arrows there and errors seemed to be said in two words, its no joke! The team must get off to better starts on the road but fought until the last out.
I can see it was an adventure to listen online and it was there too in person. Generals will see them Saturday and the team won’t forget what happened last night.
Luray makes the best of a tough situation. Their field has bad drainage and so any rain is a challenge. They have port-a-potties rather than flush toilets and their PA system buzzes continually when the announcer is not talking. But I’ve always found the Luray fans to be very friendly; they let dogs (including Chelsea!) in the ballpark; and they made a point of welcoming the fans from Waynesboro (which was very nice!). Luray and New Market have a rivalry much like Waynesboro and Staunton and that’s fun to talk about with them too!
