Turks sneak past Generals
Waynesboro could muster only four hits on the night, and Harrisonburg won another tight game with the Generals with a 6-4 decision Wednesday night.
The Turks’ Justin Somers (2-1) struck out eight but walked seven in six and a third innings on the mound. Somers was able to pitch in and then out of trouble until a pair of one-out walks in the seventh chased him and set up an RBI single by Matt Petrone and an RBI sacrifice fly by Brad Noland that brought the Generals to within 5-4.
Jordan Walton grounded out to second to end that rally in the seventh, and then Keith Picconi struck out swinging to end a two-on, two-out rally in the eighth.
A Sam Dove single with two outs in the eighth scored Casey Goss from third to give the Turks an insurance run.
Patrick Christensen wrapped it up in the ninth for his seventh save of the season.
Joey Zuniga (0-1) took the loss for Waynesboro in his first start of the season, giving up five runs on six hits in five innings of work.
Waynesboro (17-13) maintains a tenuous one-game lead in the Southern Division over Staunton (16-14), which lost in Winchester Wednesday night by a 6-1 final.
The Generals host Winchester Thursday night at Mathers Park. Adam Curtis (4-2) will get the start for Waynesboro. First pitch is at 7 p.m.
