Walton hit .364 with eight RBIs last week and had four hits and four RBIs in Waynesboro’s 9-5 win over Staunton on Sunday night. The win over Staunton clinched a 2011 playoff berth for the Generals.

For the season, Walton is fourth in the Valley League with a .375 batting average with a homer and 28 RBI.

The game will be made up at New Market on Tuesday, July 12.

The Classic pits all-stars from the Valley League against all-stars from the Cal Ripken League in Maryland.

The game will be held on Monday, July 11, at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Harrisonburg.

Walton, a sophomore at Randolph-Macon, is hitting .362 with a homer and 17 RBI for Waynesboro. His batting average puts him sixth in the league, and his .450 on-base percentage is good for fifth in the league in that category.

Reck, a junior from Nebraska-Omaha, is tied for third in the league in saves with five. Reck has an 0-1 record with a 1.54 ERA. Reck has struck out 14 in 11.2 innings and is holding opposing hitters to a .229 batting average.

Blackwell, a junior from Western Carolina, is 1-0 in 12 relief appearances for Waynesboro in 2011. The righthander has a 2.30 ERA in 15.2 innings pitched with 20 strikeouts.

Reck, a junior from Nebraska-Omaha, is 0-1 with five saves and a 1.69 ERA in 10 appearances out of the Generals bullpen with 12 strikeouts in 10.2 innings pitched.

Sartin, a junior from Nebraska-Omaha, is hitting .301 with a homer and 13 RBI for Waynesboro in 2011.

Walton is currently fifth in the league with a .363 batting average, one home run and 16 RBI.

The Haymarket home game that was rained out Sunday night will now be played as part of a doubleheader at Haymarket on July 15. The makeup game will be played at 4 p.m. The regularly scheduled game at 7 p.m. will be the nightcap.

The Staunton home game will be played on Monday, June 27, at 7 p.m. at Kate Collins Field.

No makeup date has been announced.

Starter GJ Strauss (0-2) gave up six runs on three hits and six walks in an inning and a third. New Market led 7-0 heading into the bottom of the second and 11-1 in the fifth after scoring four runs off reliever Devin Smith.

Andrew Blackwell did his part to keep the game within some striking distance, posting three shutout innings and piling up six strikeouts.

The Generals mounted a brief rally in the seventh, scoring on an RBI single by Dykota Spiess, a sacrifice fly by Chase Worthington and a run-scoring double by MJ Sartin.

Sartin had two hits and two RBI to pace the Waynesboro offense, which left 12 men on base a night after leaving 16 on base in a 9-2 loss at Covington.

Josh Frederick (1-0) got the win with two innings of one-hit relief.

Host families provide a bed, access to a bathroom, laundry room and kitchen, and in return they get a son to follow through his baseball career and life.

Long-time Waynesboro Generals family member Mary McDermott follows her boys into the business world and beyond. McDermott has been hosting players for 10 years now, and like the TV ad promoting adoption that pokes fun to get across the message that you don’t have to be perfect to be a perfect parent, well …

“My daughter, Lizzie, asked me how we could host a baseball player when we don’t know the first thing about baseball,” McDermott told a group at a recent Generals event.

Players will be arriving in Waynesboro beginning on May 29. Opening Day is Friday, June 3, and the Generals will be in action throughout June and July and hopefully into the playoffs in early August.

Host families get free admission to all 22 Generals home games as a small token of thanks for their contribution to the team.

They also, again, get a new member of the family.
