Generals Battle Turks to 6-4 Victory

On a chilly June evening with a game time temp of sixty-three degrees, the Generals dug in to defeat the Harrisonburg Turks 6-4.

With the early making of a pitcher’s duel after a quick scoreless three innings, the Generals turned it on and put three on the board in the bottom half of the fourth inning. Starting pitcher Grant Suponchick led the charge with a one out double to right field.

Suponchick was immediately sent home as first baseman Austin Russ followed with his own double to right. After an infield single by centerfielder Joseph Estrada, catcher Luke Robinson doubled to left field scoring both Estrada and Russ.

Robinson was 2-for-4 on the evening with two RBIs.

The Generals then continued to bear down as third baseman Parker Phillips led off the fifth inning with a towering homerun to left field putting the score at 4-0. Suponchick completed five innings for the Generals and would hang on for the win, allowing no earned runs on just three hits.

The Generals then brought Tyler Thompson on in relief in the sixth as he quickly found himself in a jam walking the first two batters. He would battle for two outs only to have catcher Tony Beam for the Turks shoot a single to centerfield scoring Ty Andrus and Austin Embler.

With the score notched at 4-2, Turks’ centerfield Ty Andrus would again score in the seventh, this time on a bases loaded walk. Andrus was 3-for-4 at the plate, scoring three of the four runs for the Turks.

The Turks would attempt one final rally in the ninth as Andrus would again single and later score on a sacrifice fly, but it wouldn’t be enough as the Generals were able to hang on for the 6-4 win.

Tim Holloway pitched 1 2/3 innings as he earned the save allowing just one earned run on two hits. He struck out three. Turks’ Rhett Willis walked away with the loss as he allowed four earned runs on seven hits.

The Generals will again play host Thursday evening as they take on the New Market Rebels at Kate Collins Field.
