Generals Come from Behind to Beat Tom Sox 5-4

After falling behind early, the Generals were able to persevere and mount a five run comeback to defeat their South division rival Charlottesville Tom Sox.

The Tom Sox jumped out to the early lead as they would put up their four runs in the first four innings. They would start their scoring in the bottom half of the second as left fielder Haiden Lamb would single scoring Rick Spiers and Brandon Johnson.

They would then add a run in the third and fourth before being shutdown by a platooned Generals pitching staff. Michael Wielansky and Rick Spiers would both double for the Tom Sox with Vinnie Pasquantino and Haiden Lamb adding RBIs.

The Generals would finally break out in the fifth and sixth innings as catcher Jason Bush would start the scoring on a wild pitch in the fifth. It was in the sixth however the Generals would capitalize on walks and a wild pitch to slowly chip away at the Tom Sox.

A scary moment would occur with two outs as Generals’ centerfielder Zach Evers would bloop a single up the middle bringing Tom Sox shortstop Max Bazin and second baseman Michael Wielansky head on into a collision. They would need a moment to recover and Bazin would eventually leave the game to seek medical attention.

Jason Bush would ultimately score on the play tying the game.

With the game deadlocked at four apiece in the top of the seventh, first baseman Parker Phillips would belt his third homerun of the season to go ahead of the Tom Sox 5-4.

Generals’ starter Braden Olive would battle through 3 2/3 innings while walking away with the no decision. He would allow four runs (three earned) on seven hits. From here on, the Generals bullpen would grind their way to the end as Tyler Thompson, Garrett Bye, Daniel Tolano and Andrew Perez would combine to shutout the Tom Sox for the remainder of the contest.

Bye would earn his second win of the year for the Generals as Perez would have to deal with a suddenly tight strike zone to close it out for his first save of the season.

Tom Sox starter Sean McCracken would run a solid five innings allowing just one earned run. Sean Byrnes would earn the loss for the Tom Sox as they now fall to 18-6 on the season but still maintain a two and a half game lead in the South.

The Generals improve to 16-9 as they look for their third win in a row Wednesday night back home at Kate Collins Field against the New Market Rebels.
