Generals Fall to Cannons in Eleven Innings

The Waynesboro Generals fell just short against the Purcellville Cannons falling 4-3 in eleven innings.

Backed by an incredible pitching performance from Grant Suponchick the Generals were able to keep the Cannons off of the board for the first seven innings of the ball game in what seemed to be a destined shutout for Waynesboro.

Suponchick threw five innings of shutout baseball allowing no hits and walking only one Cannons batter. He struck out four.

Proving his versatility as an all-around player, Suponchick hit for his position and later remained in the game as a designated hitter. This setup has become routine for Suponchick as he now sports a .500 batting average in twelve appearances. He was 2-for-2 at the plate with a walk.

Suponchick’s ERA remains at 0.00 through 11 2/3 innings pitched so far this season.

The Generals jumped out to an early lead in the second inning as right fielder McClain Bradley led off with a triple to centerfield. Bradley was 2-for-4 on the evening with two runs scored. He is now batting a red hot .594 on the season, with nineteen hits in thirty-two plate appearances.

Cannons’ pitcher Andy Crum mounted an impressive start of his own as he went 6 1/3 innings, holding the Generals to just two runs on seven hits.

The Generals would later add two more runs on RBIs from Hunter Wilson and Zach Evers.

Headed into the top of the ninth the score was 3-1 Generals. With Andrew Perez coming on in relief, the Cannons would soon mount their comeback on a two out triple to right field by pinch-hitter Tyler Ratliff. Kyle Ouellette would score on the play with Ratcliff eventually coming in on a wild pitch.

After a scoreless tenth, the Cannons would put together a two out rally that began with a single to left field by right fielder Mitchell Painter. Painter would then steal second base and later be brought around on an RBI single from Kyle Ouellette. Ouellette was 2-for-2 on the night with a run scored.

Perez would take the loss for Waynesboro as he went three complete allowing three earned runs on four hits.

This would be all the Cannons would need as Dalton Whitaker would remain in the game for his third inning to finish off the Generals. Whitaker would walk away with his first win on the year as he threw three innings, allowing no runs on just one hit.

The Cannons now sit at a strong 6-2 record in the North as the Generals fall to 5-4 in the South. They remain in second place behind the Charlottesville Tom Sox.

The Generals are off on Tuesday and then will hit the road for a three game road trip before returning home on Saturday evening to face the Covington Lumberjacks.
