Generals Fall to Tom Sox 3-2 in Matchup for South Lead

In a well-played game on both sides, the Charlottesville Tom Sox got the better of the Waynesboro Generals with a 3-2 win to increase their lead in the South division by a game.

The Tom Sox jumped out to the early lead in the bottom of the second as third baseman Eric Jones scored on a sacrifice fly from Cole Migliorini.  Jones had singled to start the game and then advanced to third by way of a wild-pitch and error.

The Generals would respond in the top of the third as Joseph Bellini and Zach Evers would knock a couple of back to back two out doubles to get them on the board. Evers would end up 3-for-4 on the night with a walk, as well as earning his seventh stolen bag of the year.

They would then tally their second run in the top of the fourth as center fielder Malik Stephens would battle for a bases loaded walk. The Generals would ultimately strand all three runners which would prove costly in later innings.

Bryce Windham and Vinnie Pasquantino would add an RBI apiece for the Tom Sox in the bottom half of the fourth to go ahead for what would be the final score of 3-2.

Blake Goldsberry went three innings for the Generals allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits. He would take his second loss on the season. Israel Fuentes did what he could to keep the Generals in the game as he logged a strong five innings of shutout relief. He allowed just three hits while walking one and striking out six.

In an effort to increase their lead in the South division the Tom Sox platooned their bullpen to the tune of four different relief appearances. Starter Michael Daily would go 3 1/3 getting tagged for the Generals’ two earned runs. He allowed four hits, walked three and struck out one. Rick Spiers would earn his second win of the year as he would tab 3 2/3 innings of relief. He allowed just two hits and struck out seven.

Joe Burris would earn his first save of the year for the Tom Sox. He came on for 2/3 of an inning and would shut down the Generals to close it out.

The win puts the Tom Sox at 12-5 with a game and a half lead over the Generals for the lead in the South. The Generals now sit at a strong 11-7 but remain in reach of the Tom Sox.

The Generals will take Monday off before hosting the Staunton Braves at Kate Collins Field on Tuesday evening.
