Generals Go Flat Against Lumberjacks with 8-3 Loss

After getting on the board early in the bottom half of the second, the Generals went flat falling to the Covington Lumberjacks 8-3.

The Generals would take the lead in the second as they were able to mount three runs on four hits in what seemed to be the start of an offensively charged evening.

Centerfielder Zach Evers would get everything started with a single and then quickly steal second on the second pitch of the next at bat. That stolen bag would give Evers five on the year. Evers would then advance to third on a 4-3 putout and finally make his way home on a pass ball.

With two outs, catcher Jason Bush would keep the inning alive drawing a walk which was quickly followed up with a single from Joe Vranesh. Bush would later come around to score on a Ryan Rosa single with designated hitter Andrew Robinson knocking in Vranesh for the Generals’ third and final run of the game.

After the early start, the Generals would be unable to generate anything worthwhile against the Lumberjacks as the bats would go cold for the remainder of the evening. Zach Evers would have the standout performance for the Generals as he went 3-for-4 with a run scored.

Covington would go on in the top half of the fourth to hit the Generals for four runs on a pair of hits. Generals’ starter Blake Goldsberry would struggle his way through the fourth inning as he walked a pair of batters and would watch their lead quickly diminish. Covington would add to their lead scoring again in the fifth and ninth innings.

Goldsberry would finish the evening having thrown four complete, allowing five runs (two earned) on seven hits with three walks. He would earn his first loss of the year.

Notable offensive performances for the Lumberjacks would include second baseman Alejandro Aponte and first baseman Ryan Alvarez. Aponte was 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs. Alvarez was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Lumberjacks’ starter Kyle Craft would take the win throwing five innings allowing three earned runs on nine hits. Craft would earn his second win of the season.

With the loss the Generals now fall to 7-5 in the South but still remain only a game behind the Tom Sox for the division lead. The Covington Lumberjacks are now 4-8 in the South and are currently running with a three game win streak.

The Generals will look to bounce back Sunday evening as they remain at home to take on the Front Royal Cardinals. The Cardinals are currently 6-5 in the North and 1.5 games out of first.
