Generals Rout Front Royal 17-5

generals-front-royal2The Waynesboro Generals (14-5) used a huge ten run ninth inning to put away the Front Royal Cardinals on the road Monday night 17-5.

The Cardinals could not play clean baseball on the evening as the team committed five errors and allowed six unearned runs. The Generals offense exploded for the seventeen runs on eleven hits and capitalized on all Front Royal mistakes to win in convincing fashion.

Waynesboro took an early lead in the top of the first after a Tracy Hadley sacrifice fly scored Tanner Poole. The lead would last only until the bottom of the second when Front Royal put 2 runs on the board courtesy of a Joshua Magee two-RBI single.

A big top of the fourth inning would give the Generals a comfortable 6-2 lead after scoring five runs.  Kyle Jackson delivered a bases loaded double to score the first two runs, and an error on the third baseman in the next at bat allowed two more runs to come home. Later in the inning, Charles Zaloumis produced an RBI single to left to give Waynesboro the four run lead.

Front Royal fought back with two runs in the sixth and both teams scored one run each in the seventh before Waynesboro blew the game open with a huge top of the ninth. An RBI single by Eli Putnam and a bases clearing, three-RBI double by Jackson scored the first four runs. Poole then drove in two with a single before the Cardinals’ misplays cost them. Sam Palensky would score on a passed ball and Poole on an error by the shortstop that allowed Zaloumis to advance to first. Trey Stine then hit a two-run home run to set the score at 17-5. The final four runs of the inning were all unearned.

Jackson had a terrific night at the plate going three for five with five RBIs that included the two doubles with the bases loaded. Putnam also had a strong showing in going three for six with one RBI.

Vince Braman picked up his second win as a General this summer allowing four runs on six hits with one walk and six strikeouts. Ivanniel Vazquez allowed the other run in one and one-third innings of work with three strikeouts. Conner Loeprich and Zach Neff combined to pitch the rest of the game scoreless.

UP NEXT: The Generals return home to face the Cardinals again on Tuesday night at 7:00 pm.
