Tom Sox Blank Generals 3-0

Backed by a stellar performance from starting pitcher Sean McCracken, the Tom Sox shutout the Generals 3-0 at Kate Collins field Saturday evening.

The Tom Sox hit the board early in the first inning taking a 1-0 lead as second baseman Michael Wielansky scored from third on a single by first baseman Ari Sechopoulos.

Wielansky logged two of three runs for the Tom Sox and was 3-for-3 at the plate with a walk and stolen base. The swiped bag was Wielansky’s fifth on the year.

The Sox would pad their lead in both the second and third innings adding a run a piece on RBIs from Bryce Windham and Justin Cook.

The story of the evening however remained to be Tom Sox starter Sean McCracken as he went a dominating seven innings allowing no runs on just three hits. He allowed no walks and struck out five Generals.

It is worth noting that McCracken was perfect through three and did not allow his first hit until the fourth inning. He faced the minimum number of Generals hitters through five innings.

This was McCracken’s first win of the season as he now sports a 0.00 ERA through eleven innings pitched this year.

Sean Byrnes of the Tom Sox earned his first save as he came on for two innings of relief. He allowed one hit and struck out two.

The Generals, though stifled offensively saw yet another solid relief performance from their bullpen as they combined for five innings of shutout baseball. Braden Olive and Tyler Thompson each allowed two hits and struck out one as they kept the Tom Sox deadlocked at three runs.

Generals’ starter Garrett Bye was tagged for his second loss on the year.

Waynesboro now sits at 4-3 in the South as the Tom Sox pull away to 6-2 on the season.

The Generals will look to rebound offensively as they remain at home Sunday evening to face the Staunton Braves for their first meeting this season. Come out early as the Generals will host their first ever “Baseball Chapel” at 6:00 pm. All are welcome!
