Waynesboro Falls at Winchester 3-2 in 12 Innings

wb-winchester2After losing only their second home game of the season Tuesday, the Waynesboro Generals (14-7) fell Wednesday night to the Winchester Royals (13-8) 3-2 in twelve innings.

 

The game ended when Winchester’s Derek Gibree drove in the winning run from second with an RBI single.

 

Winchester snagged the win despite being outhit by the Generals ten hits to five. The Royals also only had three different players hit safely.

 

Both teams remained scoreless until the top of the sixth when the Generals struck first with one run in the top of the inning. Trey Stine walked in his plate appearance and, after stealing second, scored after an RBI single by left fielder Eli Putnam.

 

Winchester would score in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game at one. The score would remain through the ninth inning as the teams went to extra frames to determine the victor.

 

Each team scored a run in the eleventh inning to extend the game further before Winchester would win in the bottom of the twelfth. Kyle Salladay drove in Putnam with a sacrifice fly after he had doubled and advanced on a sacrifice bunt earlier in the inning. Winchester scored with the same sequence of events in the bottom of the inning to respond.

 

Campbell Scholl turned in a terrific start for the Generals as he threw six innings, allowed only one hit, walked three, and struck out five batters. Dylan Burns pitched one inning of relief and gave up only one run. Merritt Huber tossed two scoreless innings and Tanner Kirby threw one before Zach Neff was tagged with the loss after giving up two runs, including the game winning one, in just one full inning of relief.

 

Cameron Fritz was credited with the win for Winchester.

 

UP NEXT: The Generals will be back on the road as they travel to Staunton on Thursday night to take on the Braves in a contest beginning at 7:30 pm.
