Waynesboro Loses to Strasburg on Walk-Off

generals-expressThe Strasburg Express (24-9) handed the Waynesboro Generals (21-10) their first loss in eight games Friday evening in a tightly contested 3-2 game in Strasburg.

 

Brandon Quaranta delivered a walk-off double in the bottom of the ninth to score Carter Pharis and give the Express the victory.

 

Neither team would score a run until the sixth inning when the Generals finally put one on the board. Zach Sterry hit an RBI single to score Tanner Poole and give Waynesboro the first lead of the game. Strasburg would answer in the bottom of the seventh with two runs of their own and take the lead. Poole hit a solo home run in the top of the eighth for the Generals to tie the game again before Strasburg would win in the ninth.

 

Campbell Scholl started for Waynesboro and went seven innings while allowing two runs on five hits. He had no walks or strikeouts in his start. Ivanniel Vazquez was the losing pitcher for Waynesboro, giving up the winning run in the ninth. In his relief appearance, Vazquez struck out one and walked one batter.

 

Alex Schnell earned the win in relieving for the Express.

 

UP NEXT: The Generals will return home to face the Covington Lumberjacks Saturday night at 7:00 pm.


Generals Fall to Strasburg 4-1

generals-expressAfter winning six straight games, the Waynesboro Generals (6-3) fell to the Strasburg Express (8-1) for their first home loss of the season Sunday night 4-1.

 

Strasburg got on the board first where they put one run up in the top of the second after a ball got by the first baseman and allowed left fielder Drew Avans to score from first. The Express were able to put another on the board in the third when Eric Delgado had an RBI groundout to score Joseph Fernando from third to make the score 2-0.

 

The Generals were held hitless until the sixth inning where they scored their first run of the game. Bryant Bowen broke through with a single up the middle. Nick Spangler came in to pitch run and was able to advance to third after a throwing error by the shortstop. Charles Zaloumis drove in the run with a sac fly to shrink the Express lead to 2-1.

 

Strasburg was able to push two more insurance runs across in the top of the ninth after an RBI single by Donovan May and a sacrifice fly by Erick Delgado pushed the lead to 4-1 which would hold until the end of the game.

 

Starting pitcher Benjamin Dum had a strong start for Strasburg in picking up the win. After throwing five perfect innings, Dum finished with a line of one run on three hits with five strikeouts. Joshua Green pitched the final three innings allowing no runs on just two hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

 

“Hats off to Dum. He just did an outstanding job,” Coach Matt Williams said post-game of the impressive start from the Strasburg pitcher.

 

Tyler Howe got his first start of the season for the Generals going five innings for two runs with one earned on 4 hits, two strikeouts, and four walks. Christian Cok pitched one and two-thirds innings of relief allowing just two hits and Darren Kelly finished the game allowing the final two runs on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Howe was credited with the loss.

Generals Home Opener Postponed

generals-expressThe Waynesboro Generals’ home opener against the Strasburg Express scheduled for Thursday evening has been postponed.
The make-up date has been scheduled for Sunday, June 12 at 7:00 pm.


Waynesboro Generals score five in eighth, top North-leading Strasburg, 9-4

Waynesboro broke a 4-4 tie with five runs in the bottom of the eighth in posting a 9-4 win over the Strasburg Express Wednesday night.

The Generals (13-13), winners of six of their last seven games, took the lead on a one-out RBI triple by Joseph Estrada that scored Jonathan Camp, who had singled to lead off the inning.

Austin Hale walked, and Imani Willis followed with an RBI single that made it 6-4. A Stephen Pitarra sacrifice fly made it 7-4, and back-to-back RBI singles by Clayton Taylor and Kevin Phillips made it 9-4.

The rally made a winner of Matt Horkey (3-1, 2.55 ERA), who pitched a complete game, giving up four runs, three earned, on eight hits, striking out eight and walking one, on 103 pitches, 77 of them for strikes.

Trevor Farrell (0-1, 11.57 ERA) took the loss, charged with five runs on six hits in two-thirds of an inning of relief.

Michael Brosseau continued a recent hot streak at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI.

Brosseau is 8-for-11 at the plate in the past two games, with three extra-base hits and six runs scored, raising his batting average from .287 two days ago to .337 at the end of the day on Wednesday.


Waynesboro Generals fall to Strasburg, 6-5

generals-expressA Drew Johnson seventh-inning home run broke a 5-5 tie and lifted Strasburg to a 6-5 win over the Waynesboro Generals on Friday night.

Waynesboro (7-10) had tied the game in the top of the seventh with RBI singles from Imani Willis and Kevin Phillips. After the Johnson homer broke the tie, the Generals went down in order in the eighth and ninth against Jonathan Moring, who notched his first save in 2015.

Connor Foltyn (0-2) took the loss for Waynesboro in a long relief stint, giving up three runs on nine hits in five and a third innings pitched, striking out three and walking two.

Phillips had two hits and three runs batted in for the Generals, who fall to fifth place in the South Division with the loss, five games back of first-place Staunton.


Strasburg Express nips Waynesboro Generals, 2-1

generals-expressThree Strasburg pitchers scattered eight hits, and the Express got just enough offense to top the Waynesboro Generals, 2-1, Thursday night.

Phillip Taylor (2-2) took the tough-luck loss for Waynesboro, which has now lost 12 of its last 18. Taylor gave up two runs on seven hits in six and a third innings, striking out eight and walking none on 95 pitches, 64 for strikes.

Cole Gruber had three hits for Waynesboro, which falls to 16-13 on the season and is now a season-high four games out of first place.

The Generals are on the road Friday at Covington.


Waynesboro Generals fall to Strasburg, 9-7, fall into tie for second

generals-expressWaynesboro tied a wild game at Strasburg with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth, but the Express got a run in its half of the sixth on an RBI single by Anthony Payne, added some insurance in the seventh on an RBI double by Jay Lizanich, and defeated the Generals, 9-7, Friday night.

All four pitchers for Waynesboro were touched for earned runs by Strasburg, with starter Marcus Shippey giving up four runs on seven hits in just three innings, Joe Marotta giving up three runs on four hits in two innings, and Will Lowman and Micah Gorman each giving up a run, Lowman in an inning of work and Gorman in two innings on the mound.

Lowman (0-2) took the loss for Waynesboro, which drops to 14-7 and into a second-place tie with the Harrisonburg Turks, who have won eight of their last 10 after posting a 4-3 win at Staunton Friday night.

Waynesboro hosts Harrisonburg Saturday night at Kate Collins Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.


Waynesboro Generals knock off Strasburg, 6-2

generals-expressCaleb Powell gave up two runs in eight innings, and Mike McClellan hit two home runs, and the Waynesboro Generals improved to 10-1 with a 6-2 win over Strasburg Saturday night at Kate Collins Field.

Powell (2-0) gave up a run in the Strasburg first, but then settled down from there, giving up just three hits in an efficient outing, throwing 86 pitches, 66 for strikes.

“You don’t have to worry as much with the wood bats about home runs. They’re not as likely. So you can just reach back and throw the ball,” said Powell, a sophomore at Austin Peay.

You don’t have to worry, that is, when McClellan, at least Saturday night, is at the plate. The Columbus State junior’s first homer of the game, in the third, stretched the Waynesboro lead to 5-1. His second longball of the night, leading off the sixth, pushed the lead to 6-2.

Powell was in control from that point, giving the Generals eight innings before handing the ball to North Georgia sophomore Benjamin Peters, who pitched a scoreless ninth to finish things out.

Waynesboro hosts the Harrisonburg Turks Sunday night at Kate Collins Field.
