Ashooh, Zuniga pitch Generals to 7-3 win over Woodstock

Waynesboro got solid pitching outings from a pair of newcomers and rode that and some clutch hitting to a 7-3 win over Woodstock Wednesday night.

Ryan Ashooh (2-0) got the win in his first start for the Generals, giving up three runs on six hits in five innings. Reliever Joey Zuniga, in his first day on the active roster after spending the first part of his summer coaching American Legion ball, put up three perfect innings before handing the ball to Andrew Blackwell, who got the final three outs in the ninth to close out the win.

Woodstock jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after a rough second inning for Ashooh, a University of Virginia freshman, who settled down after Waynesboro scored four in the bottom of the second on a pair of two-out, two-RBI hits by Keith Picconi and Brad Noland.

Ashooh retired eight straight after getting out of the second, and then Zuniga, a Frederick Community College freshman, retired the next nine.

Waynesboro added a run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Jeb Weymouth that scored Jordan Walton, and then two more in the eighth on a run-scoring single by University of Virginia sophomore Rob Amaro and another sac-fly RBI by Weymouth.

Waynesboro (16-11) maintains a one-game lead over second-place Staunton (15-12) in the Southern Division. Adam Curtis (3-2) gets the start for the Generals on Thursday at home against Covington.

Great job Generals, 7 unanswered runs there and a win for the first time on a Wednesday. Starting a new winning streak and time to make it 2 in a row vs Covington.

    GO GENERALS!!
