Four Buccaneers Are Heading to the Valley

WAYNESBORO, Va. – The Waynesboro Generals are set to add a group of four Buccaneers from Barry University for the upcoming 2023 campaign.

Pitcher Federico Zapata, outfielder Sean Shelly, catcher Matthew Menendez and outfielder Danny Garcia will make the trip to the valley this season from the Division II Florida based institution.

Zapata hails from Miami, Fla. And has seen action in 17 games for the Buccaneers in 2023. The freshman has made all of his appearances out of the bullpen and has tallied a 1-2 record along with six saves including a five-pitch save against St. Thomas earlier this month.

Shelly has started in 13 games so far this season and is currently swinging .302 with a trio of long balls and 12 RBI. The Clearwater, Fla. native can play the outfield along with first base and tallied his best game of the season back in February in a win over Saint Leo as he tallied a 3-for-4 effort with two runs scored.

Menendez is in his second season at Barry after transferring in from UCF. The sophomore has been the primary catcher for the Buccaneers this season, swinging .258 and tallying four homeruns. Hailing from Pembroke Pines, Fla., Menendez has committed just one error in 31 games this season for the Bucs.

Garcia started his collegiate career at Assumption before transferring to Barry. The Massachusetts native has only seen action in nine games for the Bucs this season mostly in relief roles. A left-handed swinger, Garcia is 2-for-8 on the season and has amassed five RBI.

The 2023 season is set to start on June 1 as the Generals make the trip across the mountain to battle the Charlottesville TomSox at 7 p.m.
