Generals beat Rapids, 8-4

Starting pitcher Adam Curtis gave Waynesboro what it needed after a couple of bullpen-taxing nights, going eight strong innings in an 8-4 Generals win over Southern Division foe Rockbridge Thursday night.

Curtis (3-2) gave up two runs on six hits in his stint. He struck out four and didn’t walk a batter while also pitching around three Generals errors.

Waynesboro needed the outing from Curtis after going deep into its bullpen in a 9-8 win at Staunton on Tuesday and an 11-1 loss at Covington on Wednesday. But even with the good performance from Curtis, the outcome was very much in doubt until the offense came alive in the late innings.

The Generals broke a 2-2 tie in the seventh when MJ Sartin reached on an error and came around to score on a two-out single by Brad Noland. An inning later, Jeb Weymouth laced a two-out single to right to score Dykota Spiess from second and ignite a five-run Waynesboro rally that included an RBI single by Matt Petrone, a two-RBI double by Noland and an RBI single by Scott Wilcox.

Rockbridge was able to get two runs in the ninth off reliever Andrew Blackwell, who struck out Matt Scruggs with a runner on first to end the game.

Travis Thomas (2-2) took the tough-luck loss for the Rapids, giving up three runs, just one earned, in six and two-thirds innings.

Weymouth was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two stolen bases. Spiess, Noland and Wilcox had two hits each for Waynesboro.
