Generals fall 3-0 at Rockbridge

Waynesboro got another good effort against Rockbridge from Tim Leather, but the Generals could only manage two hits off Jordan Elliot, and the Rapids got a 3-0 win in Lexington Saturday night.

Leather (2-3) had won back-to-back starts against Rockbridge earlier in the month, and had shut out the Rapids through four before a pair of errors helped the Rapids get their first run across in the fifth when Clinton Freeman hit a grounder to short that Keith Picconi booted allowing Richard Palase to score and give Rockbridge a 1-0 lead.

A Tyler Molinaro RBI single chased Leather in the sixth, and a Nick Berry sacrifice fly later in the sixth gave Rockbridge a 3-0 lead.

The Generals would only get one runner past second base on the night – when Matt Petrone walked with one out in the eighth, stole second and advanced to third on a fly ball by Brad Noland. Shane Halley popped out to second to end that threat.

Elliot (3-1) went eight innings for the win. Jason Long got the final three outs for his second save of the season.

Waynesboro (22-18) maintains a one and a half game lead over Staunton (20-19), whose game at Covington (19-20) was rained out and will be made up on Thursday.

Rockbridge (19-21), winners of three straight and four of its last five, has a one-game lead over Woodstock in the race for the eighth and final playoff spot.

Waynesboro will host Staunton Sunday night at Mathers Park. TJ Page (0-1, 4.62) will get the start for the Generals. First pitch is at 7 p.m.
