Generals rout Covington

Waynesboro used a homer, three hits and five RBI from Travis Echols and eight strong innings on the mound from Tavis Bruce to ride to an easy 11-2 win over Covington in the regular-season finale for both teams Friday night.

The Generals (26-18), the #3 seed in the 2011 Valley League playoffs, will host #6 seed Rockbridge (21-23) Saturday at 7 p.m. at Mathers Park in Waynesboro in Game 1 of a best-of-three first-round series.

Waynesboro will go into the postseason as maybe the hottest team in the league, winning seven of its last eight to seize control of what had been a tight Southern Division race. The key down the stretch: pitching, as was the case against Friday in Covington. Bruce (1-1) gave up one run on five hits in eight innings of work.

Bruce got all the support that he’d need in a three-run second. Devin Smith singled to center, scoring Scott Wilcox from second to get Waynesboro on the board at 1-0. An Echols RBI single that followed an error that allowed Smith to score extended the lead to 3-0.

It was 4-0 in the fifth when Echols came up with two outs and the bases loaded. Echols took the pitch from Sean Hagen to left-center and out of the ballpark for a grand slam that broke the game open.

Smith, Wilcox and Jimmy Holton each had two hits for Waynesboro.

GREAT JOB!!! Keep up the good work! I appreciate seeing this team lift one another up after a good play was made – big or small. The announcer of this game mentioned about how the whole team came onto the field to congratulate after one RBI came in and that 1 RBI must mean something to them. I have seen them do that a lot. Not all the teams do that. That shows good team spirit. Keep the fire going!! Best of luck.

Great game by the Generals and winners of 9 out of the last 11 games. The Turks and Royals might be getting all the highlights from their TV 3 stations and hearing how good they both are, but these Generals in the last 11 games is hotter than anyone and at the right time. Great game by Tavis Bruce, ever so close to our 2nd shutout this year.

I have to mention about what Baseball Fan mentioned above, listening to the podcast online tonight was a challenge, it seemed whomever the broadcaster was, just didn’t care for the game tonight. Knew that all the pitchers was going to be infielders and outfielders and catchers with position players playing everywhere and was laughing at times throughout the broadcast and whomever he was, he thought it was odd when we came out as a team when the Generals scored a run. Maybe the Jacks didn’t care but the Generals did and ended the regular season with a great win.

Lastly I wanna mention a great improvement in wins since 2009 season. Back in 2009 we had 18 wins, last year 23 wins and now 26 and counting. Great job. Plus look at the last few games not counting last Saturday’s game at Rapids. Last Friday vs Cov: 8 runs, Sunday vs Sta: 9 runs, Tuesday vs Rock: 11 runs, Wednesday vs Sta: 10 runs, and tonight vs Cov: 11 runs. Now thats producing runs and each game all hits was over 10 plus. Keep it up Generals and good luck in 1st round vs Rockbridge Rapids.

Mid-season, I commented that in seven years of hosting players, we’ve never seen a group of guys that have truly come together as a team like this year’s Waynesboro Generals. That’s even more true as the regular season ends! They get along so well, they appreciate and support one another. It shows on and off the field. Each game, our players step up to the challenge like Tavis did last night. The season is short (even with the playoffs!) and soon they’ll be back at school. Playing together will certainly be a lasting memory for each and every one of them. GO GENERALS-WE ARE PROUD THAT YOU ARE PART OF THIS COMMUNITY!
