Generals Win Fourth Straight Game in Victory at Covington

generals-lumberjacks2The Waynesboro Generals (4-2) continued their winnings ways Thursday night taking down the Covington Lumberjacks (1-2) 5-2 in what was the Generals first road win of the season and fourth straight victory.

 

Waynesboro used the longball to their advantage as four of the Generals five runs came via home runs. The first came off the bat of T.J. Condon who launched a two-run blast in the top of the second after Kyle Jackson reached base on a walk. The second was a two-run shot as well from first baseman Zach Sterry in the top of the third scoring Cory Alexander II who reached on a single to right.

 

The fifth run for the Generals came from an RBI single by Nick Spangler in the top of the fourth scoring Eli Putnam who doubled to left field earlier in the inning.

 

Covington got one run back in the bottom of the inning after Brandon Vicens hit a sacrifice fly to score Fabian Pena. The other Covington run came in the bottom of the eighth where a Miguel Reyes RBI single scored Pena again.

 

David Ehmen (1-1) gave Waynesboro another strong start on the mound going five innings for only one run on four hits with two strikeouts and one walk gaining the win in the process. Darren Kelly and Ivanniel Vazquez each pitched two innings of relief to finish up the game. Kelly allowed no runs and only one hit with three strikeouts while Vazquez allowed one run on two hits with three strikeouts as well.

 

Dolan Kunkel was tagged with the loss for Covington after allowing all five runs to the Generals on five hits in four innings pitched with five strikeouts and one walk.

 

Kirk Sidwell and Andrew Bullock both played in their first game with the Generals Thursday night. Sidwell went 0 for 2 in two at bats after pinch hitting for left fielder Alexander II in the seventh inning. Bullock went 1 for 1 after pinch hitting for right fielder Kyle Jackson in the sixth inning.

 

UP NEXT: The Generals look to win their fifth straight game as they take on the division leading Charlottesville Tom Sox (4-1) at home Friday night at 7:00pm.
