Hoo, boy, that was ugly. Six Waynesboro errors led to eight unearned Covington runs that the Lumberjacks used as the foundation to their 14-5 shellacking of the Generals Wednesday night at Mathers Park.
Starting pitcher Brian Adkins was cruising with a 2-0 lead with two outs in the fifth before back-to-back RBI hits by Andrew Longley and Mike Martinez knotted the score at 2-2. A two-out sixth-inning error by Waynesboro first baseman T.J. Kuban opened the floodgates to three unearned Covington runs that allowed the ‘Jacks to take a 5-2 lead.
The Generals rallied for three in the bottom of the sixth with the big blow a two-run single by catcher Chris Colquhoun, but Covington broke the game open in the seventh with four more unearned runs off Waynesboro reliever Dylan Ray (0-1).
Martinez put the game out of reach with a long grand-slam home run to left in the ninth.
Grant Fillipitch and Drew Turocy each had three hits for Waynesboro.
