Make it five: Generals rally from seven down to stun Staunton

A Shane Halley two-run homer in the seventh got Waynesboro on the board and ignited a rally that brought the Generals all the way back from a 7-0 deficit to a 9-8 win at rival Staunton Tuesday night.

An MJ Sartin RBI sacrifice fly made it 7-3 Staunton with two outs in the seventh. Two batters later, Bradley Noland tripled down the right-field line to score Andrew Blackwell and Chase Worthington and pull the Generals to within 7-5.

In the eight, Waynesboro scored four runs on a hit, two Staunton errors and three walks. The Braves rallied for a run in the eighth off reliever Joseph Lucas (1-0), and Andrew Reck pitched a perfect ninth for his fifth save of the season.

Halley, a University of Virginia junior playing in his third game for Waynesboro since returning from the College World Series, had two of the Generals’ five hits on the night. Waynesboro hitters worked Staunton for seven walks, six in the critical seventh and eight innings.

Austin Adams (2-1) took the loss, giving up four runs, only one of them earned, without recording an out.

Waynesboro now owns a perfect 5-0 record against Staunton in 2011

Wow what a comeback win for the ages. Through 6 innings the Braves held us to one hit and I was just asking lets get a walk or a hit because up to that point only 1 runner was on base. After the walk and then Shane Halley’s home run, the flood gates opened and even the scent of a skunk smell around that time around the area didn’t hurt the Generals. They fought back with 9 runs in 2 innings just with 4 hits but the General fans will take it. Last year and even going back to 2009 we struggled against Staunton at home and there in John Moxie. Its a new year and very proud of these guys. Wow is all I gotta say, I know other Generals fans in attendance has gotta agree with that. WTG Generals.

Missed the game because of work, and after reading the recap I wished I had missed work instead. Big comeback and 5-0 start against Staunton for 2011, it would have been great to be at Stauton tonight.

Until I read GeneralsSignGuy Mike’s comment, I had not considered the skunk factor. Last year, a family of skunks walked on to the field near home plate during a July 20th game between the Braves and the Turks. The Braves lost that game as well. Although last night’s skunk did not make an actual appearance on the field, he or she was bad luck for the Braves!
