Offense Struggles in Generals’ Second Loss

wb-winchester2After managing only one run and four hits on the evening, the Waynesboro Generals dropped their second straight road game to the Winchester Royals 5-1.

The Generals got on the board quickly in the top of the first after Tanner Poole was hit by a pitch in the first at bat of the game. Poole stole second and third, and reached home on a throwing error to third base by the catcher. The lead would be brief, however, as Winchester immediately responded in the bottom of the first with two runs. A bases loaded sacrifice fly by the Royals’ Trevor Jensen followed by an RBI single by Ryan Keegan gave Winchester a lead it would never relinquish.

The offense struggled all night for Waynesboro as the team did not get their first hit until the fourth inning with a Zach Sterry double. Sterry and Nick Spangler were the only Generals to hit safely in the game with each having two hits on the evening. Winchester plated runs in the third, fourth, and eighth innings to continue to widen the Generals’ run deficit.

Waynesboro starter David Ehmen managed only three and two-thirds innings after surrendering four runs on eight hits, walking three, and striking out five. Connor Loeprich, Merritt Huber, and Patrick Solomita all came on in relief effort with Solomita giving up the other Winchester run.

Winchester starter John Barr had a strong outing after pitching five innings giving up only one run and one hit. The bullpen followed the starter’s lead as four different pitchers pitched an inning of scoreless relief.

Sterry was the leader on offense for the Generals going two for three with two doubles on the night to continue his hot start at the plate. Spangler was also two for three with two singles.

UP NEXT: After having their home opener postponed on Thursday, the Generals will play their first home game Saturday evening against the Woodstock River Bandits at 7:00 pm.
