Generals Cap Regular Season with 8-0 Shutout of Staunton

The Waynesboro Generals (30-12) finished off the regular season with a 8-0 shutout of the Staunton Braves (15-27) in their final home game Tuesday evening.

 

Seven Waynesboro pitchers combined to throw the shutout while allowing just two hits all game. The offense also came to play as the team scored the eight runs on fourteen hits.

 

The Generals broke through on the scoreboard in the third inning when Tanner Poole blasted his sixth home run of the season, a two-run shot, to make it 2-0 Waynesboro.

 

The home team would add three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning as the stretched the lead to five runs. Brent Sakurai dropped a bunt with a runner on third to score the first run, and Poole came through again with a two-RBI triple to add two more.

 

In the fifth, Tracy Hadley came home to score on a wild pitch followed by a bloop single by Kyle Jackson to score two more runs and give the Generals a 7-0 lead. Waynesboro would add one more as Sam Palensky came in to score after a throwing error by the right fielder on a Zach Sterry single, making the final score 8-0.

 

Adam Tarver was the starting pitcher for Waynesboro, pitching perfect first and second innings with one strikeout. Tyler Elwer came in for the third and allowed just one hit with one strikeout as well.  Newcomer Jonathan Murphy pitched perfect fourth and fifth innings and struck out one while also earning the win. Tyler Davis followed him in the sixth with two strikeouts and one walk. Darren Kelly, Brett Sasse, and Conner Loeprich finished the game in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings, respectively. Kelly and Sasse both struck out two in their scoreless innings of work while Loeprich allowed one hit with one strikeout.

 

With the win, the Waynesboro Generals finish the year with the best winning percentage in history at .714. The Generals also ended with a 19-2 home record.

Generals Get Back on Track with 6-3 Win over Purcellville

The Waynesboro Generals (13-5) picked up their thirteenth win of the season Sunday evening after a 6-3 victory over the Purcellville Cannons (5-15).

 

Purcellville scored the first run of the game after a sharply hit grounder by Tyler Ratliff took a bad hop for an RBI single to give the Cannons a 1-0 lead.

 

The Generals would strike back in the bottom of the second inning for three runs, however, as the seven, eight, and nine hitters all delivered RBI hits. The team broke through after a Bryant Bowen RBI double to left center scored Eli Putnam who reached on a single. Charles Zaloumis followed with an RBI single to score Bowen, and Sam Palensky doubled home the third run to give the Generals a 3-1 lead.

 

Ray Hernandez struck back for the Cannons, however, with his third home run of the year, a solo shot, to make it a 3-2 ball game.

 

The Waynesboro lead would widen in the bottom of the fourth, though, as the bottom of the lineup came through again. Back-to-back singles by Bowen and Zaloumis as well as a throwing error by the second baseman loaded the bases. Tanner Poole then doubled into left center to score two runs and make it 5-2. Palesnky would score on a passed ball to stretch the lead to 6-2.

 

The Cannons would tack one more run on in the eighth, but the Generals would secure the victory 6-3.

 

Adam Tarver had a strong start on the mound for Waynesboro tossing six and two-thirds innings allowing just two runs on four hits with four walks and eight strikeouts. Tanner Kirby would pitch one and one-third innings of relief allowing one run on two hits. Darren Kelly earned the save after pitching a scoreless ninth frame.
