A four-run fifth gave Waynesboro the lead, and a four-run ninth provided the final cushion in a 9-3 win at first-place Haymarket Saturday night.

The Senators had jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a three-run fourth off Generals starter Taylor Sandefur (5-0), but Waynesboro rallied in the fifth with an inning highlighted by a two-run triple by Cody Hudson, an RBI sac fly by Zephan Guyear and an RBI bases-loaded walk by Terrell Thompson.

A Guyear RBI single that plated Drew Turocy made it 5-3 in the sixth, which is where things stood until the ninth, when the Waynesboro offense erupted for four more runs with RBI singles by Thompson, Jon Clinard and Grant Fillipitch and an RBI sac fly by Hudson.

Sandefur went seven innings and gave up three runs on seven hits while striking out five.

Turocy had a 4-for-6 night at the plate, and catcher Alan Stoupa was 3-for-5 with a run scored.

A Grant Fillipitch two-RBI single gave Waynesboro a seventh-inning lead, and a four-run ninth highlighted by an Alan Stoupa two-run single gave the Generals a 10-4 win at New Market Thursday night.

Starting pitcher Michael Reed put in a strong effort for Waynesboro, pitching into the sixth and giving up three runs on six hits, but he left with his team down 3-2 after the Rebels put up a twospot in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead.

The Generals rallied with four in the seventh, with Jon Clinard tying the game with an RBI single and Fillipitch following one batter later with his two-run hit.

It was 6-4 entering the ninth when Waynesboro put up another four on the scoreboard off Anthony Constanatos.

The comeback made a winner of Greg Smith (1-0), who pitched an inning and two-thirds of hitless, scoreless relief.

Stoupa had three hits and three RBI for Waynesboro.

John Fillipitch may never get to leave.

“Some of the guys were talking about that in the dugout. He picked a good weekend to be here,” said his son, Grant, who hit two homers with dad in the stands at Mathers Park to lead the Waynesboro Generals to a 6-4 win over the visiting Haymarket Senators Saturday night. Read more

Jeremy Fitzgerald pitched eight scoreless innings, and Cody Hudson had three hits and knocked in three runs, as Waynesboro won on the road at Rockbridge 5-0 Saturday night.

The game was shortened to eight innings by a thunderstorm that disrupted play in the top of the ninth inning.

Fitzgerald (1-1) held the Rapids in check all night long, giving up four hits and striking out four. The Generals offense pounded Rockbridge starting pitcher A.J. Holland (0-2) for 10 hits and five runs in five and a third innings.

Waynesboro got out early on Holland with two runs in the second highlighted by a triple from Hudson that scored Zephan Guyear. Hudson then came in on a two-out single by Alan Stoupa that made it 2-0.

A threespot in the sixth chased Holland with a two-run double by Hudson and a T.J. Kuban single padding the lead to 5-0.
