Brent Sakurai won the game and player of the game honors with his walk-off solo home run in the ninth.

Brent Sakurai crushed a solo walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to propel the Waynesboro Generals (22-10) over the Covington Lumberjacks (17-15) for a 6-5 home victory Saturday night.

After leading 5-4 in the top of the inning, a bases loaded walk tied the game before Sakurai would deliver the game-winning hit.

Covington got on the board first in the first innings with four hits that led to one run. Waynesboro would answer in the bottom of the second when Andrew Bullock scored on a fielder’s choice by Eli Putnam. Two more Lumberjack runs in the top of the third, though, gave them the lead back at 4-1.

The Generals cut into the deficit in the fourth when they put two runs across to make it 4-3. Kyle Jackson and Sakurai both delivered RBI singles making the Covington lead one run. Then in the fifth, a throwing error by the second baseman on a Jackson infield single allowed two runs to score to give the Generals a one run lead before they won the game in the ninth.

Alex Ernestine started on the mound for Waynesboro and when four innings while allowing four runs on nine strikeouts. He struck out two and walked two batters. Dylan Burns had an outstanding relief effort, pitching four and two-thirds innings while striking out six with only one walk. He was responsible for the tying run that came in during the ninth inning after leaving the game with two outs in the ninth. Tanner Kirby was the winning pitcher after throwing the final one-third of an inning with one walk.
