Waynesboro rolls Front Royal, 14-2

It didn’t look like Waynesboro was going to get out of the first inning. Then Front Royal couldn’t get out of the fifth or sixth.

The Generals rallied from an early 2-0 deficit thanks to a four-run fifth and a seven-run sixth to post a 14-2 win over the Cardinals on Tuesday night.

Starting pitcher TJ Page struggled mightily in the first, walking five Front Royal hitters before getting out of the inning by inducing a ground ball off the bat of Tucker Brown to limit the damage to two runs.

Front Royal left the bases full again in the second, and Page settled down from there, though he was only able to make it through four innings due to the high early pitch count.

Waynesboro tied it at 2-2 in the second on a pair of two-out run-scoring base hits by Rob Amaro and Scott Wilcox. Chase Worthington scored from third on a double-steal in the fourth to give Waynesboro a 3-2 lead before the floodgates opened in the middle innings.

The Generals batted around in the fifth, getting RBI singles from Jordan Walton and Worthington, a bases-loaded walk to Amaro and an RBI sacrifice fly by Wilcox. The sixth saw 12 Generals stride to the plate, with the big blow of that inning being a two-run double by Walton.

Devin Smith (3-0) got the win with four innings of scoreless one-hit relief.

Waynesboro (20-17) is on the road at Strasburg Wednesday night.
