Generals Split Double Header at Charlottesville

wb generals logoThe Waynesboro Generals (28-12) split a double header Sunday evening at the Charlottesville Tom Sox (13-26), losing the first game 4-2 and winning the second 14-6.

 

In the first game, the Waynesboro offense failed to get going, managing only five hits on the night. Each team put one run on the board in the first inning to tie the game at 1-1. For the Generals, Tanner Poole came home when an error by the third baseman allowed him to score. Charlottesville would score two runs in the bottom of the third to give them the a lead they would never relinquish.

 

Waynesboro scored only one more run in the top of the fifth when Poole scored again on an RBI single by Andrew Bullock. The Tom Sox scored once more in the sixth to make the final score 4-2 in a shortened 7 inning game.

 

Dylan Burns pitched all six innings for Waynesboro in the loss. He allowed four runs on seven hits, struck out one batter, and walked one as well.

 

In the second game, the Waynesboro used fourteen runs on eleven hits to outscore the Tom Sox in a rout. The Generals struck first on a Kyle Jackson RBI double in the second, but the lead did not last long after three Tom Sox runs in the bottom of the inning.

 

Another RBI double by Jackson in the fourth made the score 3-2 Charlottesville before the Generals would take the lead in the fifth with three runs. Poole crushed a three-run home run to score Charles Zaloumis and Kirk Sidwell to geve Waynesboro their first lead of the game at 5-3. The Tom Sox cut into the lead with a run in the fifth as well to make the score 5-4 after five.

 

The offense came alive in the sixth inning as Waynesboro scored eight runs to extend their lead to nine runs. Jackson started things off with a solo home run and his third RBI of the evening. Zaloumis then added two runs to the lead with a two-RBI single and would later score on a wild pitch. Tracy Hadley scored Poole with an RBI double to score the fifth run of the inning. Sam Palensky scored on a wild pitch, Hadley on a bases loaded walk, and Jackson on an RBI single by Kirk Sidwell to make it 13-4. Charlottesville scored one run in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to eight after six.

 

Waynesboro scored one more run when Tanner Poole hit his second home run of the evening, a solo shot, to make it fourteen of the evening. Charlottesville would score one more as well, making the final score 14-6.

 

Merritt Huber started the game, going three innings and allowed three runs on six hits with a strikeout and two walks. Alex Ernestine earned the win in his two innings after giving up just one run on two hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Conner Loeprich allowed two runs, struck out one, and walked one batter in his two innings of relief.

Campbell Scholl pitched eight shutout innings while the offense put up five runs on eight hits as the Waynesboro Generals (27-11) topped the Harrisonburg Turks (26-14) 5-0 in another home victory Saturday evening.

 

Waynesboro now has a two game lead over the Turks in the South Division. The win puts the Generals just one win away from clinching the South Division title for the 2016 season.

 

Andrew Bullock drove in the first run of the game for the Generals with a sacrifice fly that scored Tracy Hadley and gave them a 1-0 lead.  Then in the fifth inning, it was Hadley scoring again on an RBI groundout by Trey Stine that widened the lead to two runs.

 

 

The score held at 2-0 until the bottom of the eighth when Waynesboro pushed three runs across to extend the lead to 5-0. Tanner Poole scored the first run on a squeeze play, and Sam Palensky followed with a two-RBI single to score the fourth and fifth runs.

 

Scholl allowed just three hits and walked four batters in his eight innings of work. He now has a record of 2-0 in six starts and boasts an ERA of 1.04. Darren Kelly pitched the final inning while allowing just one hit and walking one batter.

Waynesboro Falls at New Market 10-7

generals-rebels2The Waynesboro Generals (26-11) came up short on the road against the New Market Rebels (16-23) Friday evening, losing 10-7.

 

The loss snapped a five game winning streak for the Generals and was only their second loss in their last ten ballgames.

 

New Market scored early in the bottom of the second to give them their first lead at 2-0. Waynesboro cut into the lead with one run in the third when Jorge Flores hit a solo home run.

 

The Generals would then take the lead in the top of the fourth as they put up three runs in the inning. Three RBI singles by Kyle Jackson, Flores, and Kirk Sidwell in the inning gave them a 4-2 lead heading into the bottom of the inning. The lead evaporated quickly as the Rebels would put up six runs in the bottom of the fourth to retake the lead at 8-4.

 

Each team put up two runs in the seventh inning. For the Generals, Tracy Hadley drove in a run with an RBI groundout, and Zach Sterry had an RBI single to cut into the deficit. New Market responded, however, after an RBI double and a sacrifice fly. Waynesboro would score one more run in the eighth inning after a Flores RBI putout, but could not push anymore across, losing by a final score of 10-7.

 

David Ehmen started and was the losing pitcher for Waynesboro after allowing eight runs on ten hits in his four innings of work. He struck out five and walked two. Merritt Huber pitched two innings of relief and gave up the other two runs while walking two batter and striking out one.  Tyler Davis and Ivanniel Vazquez each pitched a scoreless inning of relief while Davis struck out one and walked two.

 

UP NEXT: The Generals will face the Harrisonburg Turks for the final time of the regular season Saturday night beginning at 7:00 pm at Kate Collins Field.

Six Run Seventh Inning Propels Generals over Strasburg

Using six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Waynesboro Generals (26-10) edged out the Strasburg Express (26-11) 8-7 on Thursday night at Linco Park.

 

Strasburg got on the scoreboard first on an RBI groundout in the top of the first inning. Starting pitcher Tyler Elwer was able to escape further damage with runners on, though, making it 1-0. The Express would extend their lead with a big four run third inning to make the score 5-0. Brandon Quaranta had a two-run home run followed by a bases loaded hit batsman and a sacrifice fly extended the lead to five runs.

 

Waynesboro finally got on the board in the bottom of the third as Tanner Poole drove in Brent Sakurai with an RBI single. They would not score again until the bottom of the sixth inning when Tracy Hadley tripled and came home to score on a passed ball to make it 5-2.

 

Sakurai delivered an RBI single to score T.J. Condon to make it a 5-3 game. Then, back-to-back hit batsmen and a walk with the bases loaded scored another run to pull the Generals within one. Hadley then came through with a clutch two-RBI single to give the team a 6-5 lead. Andrew Bullock followed with another single to score to more, and Waynesboro ended the inning with a 8-5 lead.

 

Strasburg would score in the eighth and ninth inning to pull within one run, but the Generals would hold them off just enough to come away with 8-7 victory.

 

Elwer went just two innings, allowing five runs on six hits with two walks and one strikeout. Brett Sasse came on in relief and pitched six and one-third innings in an effort that earned him the win. He gave up two runs on three hits and struck out five batters. Tanner Kirby got the final two outs of the game in his two-thirds of an inning.

Waynesboro Routs Covington on the Road 14-3

generals-lumberjacks2Putting on another impressive offensive showcase, the Waynesboro Generals (25-10) blew out the Covington Lumberjacks (20-16) in an impressive 14-3 road victory.

 

Waynesboro is now on a four game win streak and are also winners of nine of their last ten games.

 

The Generals got things started quickly in the top of the first when Zach Sterry drove in the first run of the game with an RBI groundout. Then, in the third, Waynesboro put three more runs on the board to stretch the lead to 4-0. Charles Zaloumis had a ground-rule double to score the first run of the inning to give the team a two run lead. Eli Putnam would then drive the other two runs in with a two-RBI single, doubling their lead.

 

The top of the fourth saw Waynesboro double their lead again by putting up four more runs in the inning. Zaloumis drove in another run with an RBI groundout, making it 5-0. Then, Sterry belted his thirteenth home run of the year, a two-run shot, to score himself and Tanner Poole.  Andrew Bullock would later score on a wild pitch to give the Generals a comfortable eight run lead.

 

Covington scored one in the bottom of the fourth to finally break into the scoring column, but the Generals answered after Zaloumis delivered his third RBI on the night with a sacrifice fly in the fifth. The Lumberjacks scored again in the bottom of the inning, making the score 8-2.

 

The Generals continued their hot hitting into the sixth as the offense pushed across five more runs, extending their already impressive lead. Tracy Hadley hit an RBI single, scoring one run, followed by a bases loaded hit by pitch that scored another. Sam Palensky hit a two-RBI single with the bases loaded to put the Waynesboro lead at eleven. Kirk Sidwell drove in the final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to put the Generals at fourteen runs scored on the evening. Covington scored one run in the bottom of the ninth to set the final score at 14-3.

 

Tyler Howe started and earned the win for the Generals on the mound, going six innings and giving up two runs on six hits. He walked two and struck out seven. Conner Loeprich pitched the final three innings and allowed one run on four hits with five strikeout.

The Waynesboro Generals (24-10) defeated the Harrisonburg Turks (23-12) Monday night at home by a score of 10-3.

 

The Generals scored their ten runs using eighteen hits where all but one starter had a base hit in the game. With the win, the Generals extend their South division lead to 1.5 games.

 

Harrisonburg struck first in the top of the first inning after back to back doubles put them ahead 1-0. The lead did not last long, though, as the Generals tied the game in the bottom of the inning. Tanner Poole led off with a single, and a misplay by the center fielder allowed him to advance to third. Sam Palensky drove him home with an RBI single to tie the game at 1 a piece.

 

Waynesboro would break the tie quickly in the bottom of the second, exploding for six runs to make it 7-1. After Eli Putnam reached on a single, Kyle Jackson hit an RBI triple to give the team a 2-1 lead. T.J. Condon followed with an RBI double to score Jackson to make it 3-1. Then, a throwing error by Harrisonburg pitcher Donte Lindsay on a Tanner Poole bunt allowed two more General runs to score. Trey Stine had an RBI single later in the inning and another misplay by the center fielder allowed another run to score stretching the lead to 7-1.

 

More Harrisonburg miscues would allow two more Waynesboro runs to score in the bottom of the third. A throwing error on a double play attempt allowed Brent Sakurai to score, and Stine delivered another RBI single to make the score 9-1.

 

Mason George would hit a two-run home run in the seventh for Harrisonburg to cut the lead to 9-3, and Charles Zaloumis delivered an RBI single in the eighth, making the final score 10-3.

 

Vince Braman had a strong start on the mound, going eight full innings while only allowing three runs on five hits. He walked two and struck out eight batters in earning the victory. Vazquez pitched a perfect ninth inning with one strikeout.

Waynesboro Tops Woodstock in Extras

generals-woodstock2After 12 innings Sunday evening, the Waynesboro Generals (23-10) finally defeated the Woodstock River Bandits (10-24) on the road 11-9.

 

Kyle Jackson gave the Generals the lead in the twelfth on a two-run home run to carry the team to victory.

 

Waynesboro and Woodstock both got off to hot starts in the game, putting up runs early and often. The Generals got two in the first on RBI singles by Tracy Hadley and Eli Putnam. Woodstock responded with two of their own in the bottom of the inning before Waynesboro would put up five runs in the top of the second. Charles Zaloumis delivered an RBI single before Zach Sterry cleared the bases with a grand slam, his twelfth home run of the year, to make the score 7-2.

 

The River Bandits did not go away, though, as their offense continued to score runs and keep them in the game. They scored one run in the second inning and two in the third and fourth innings to tie the game up at 7.

 

In the sixth, Tanner Poole scored on a passed ball, and Zaloumis drove another run in with an RBI single in the seventh to give the Generals a 9-7 lead. Woodstock answered with two runs in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game. Neither team would score in the ninth, sending the game to extra innings.

 

Adam Tarver started on the mound and pitched three and two-thirds innings while allowing seven runs on six hits. He struck out two and walked four batters. Merritt Huber came on in relief and pitched three and one-third scoreless innings, giving up just two hits and striking out five. Darren Kelly pitched three innings of relief and allowed two runs on six hits. He finished with four strikeouts and two walks. Conner Loeprich earned the win after his two innings of relief while allowing two hits with one strikeout.

Brent Sakurai crushed a solo walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to propel the Waynesboro Generals (22-10) over the Covington Lumberjacks (17-15) for a 6-5 home victory Saturday night.

 

After leading 5-4 in the top of the inning, a bases loaded walk tied the game before Sakurai would deliver the game-winning hit.

 

Covington got on the board first in the first innings with four hits that led to one run. Waynesboro would answer in the bottom of the second when Andrew Bullock scored on a fielder’s choice by Eli Putnam. Two more Lumberjack runs in the top of the third, though, gave them the lead back at 4-1.

 

The Generals cut into the deficit in the fourth when they put two runs across to make it 4-3. Kyle Jackson and Sakurai both delivered RBI singles making the Covington lead one run. Then in the fifth, a throwing error by the second baseman on a Jackson infield single allowed two runs to score to give the Generals a one run lead before they won the game in the ninth.

 

Alex Ernestine started on the mound for Waynesboro and when four innings while allowing four runs on nine strikeouts. He struck out two and walked two batters. Dylan Burns had an outstanding relief effort, pitching four and two-thirds innings while striking out six with only one walk. He was responsible for the tying run that came in during the ninth inning after leaving the game with two outs in the ninth. Tanner Kirby was the winning pitcher after throwing the final one-third of an inning with one walk.
