Pitcher’s Dual Finishes In 4th Straight Win For Waynesboro

In a game that only saw 5 hits between the two teams combined, timely hitting was the key factor in deciding a winner in the tightly contested ball game in Winchester Wednesday night.

Before General starter Nathan Schneider (St. Mary’s) settled into one of his best outings of the summer, they got to him for a run in the first. The first batter of Schneider’s night reached base via the walk. He later stole second before a bouncer up the middle scored him from second base. The Royals had jumped out to a 1-0 lead after 1 complete inning.

As mentioned, both pitchers would be stellar. The only time the Generals scored was in the 4th inning. The inning would start with an airmailed throw on a slow roller hit by Bryce Teodosio (Clemson). Andrew Orzel (Wofford) would then walk to put runners at 1st and second with one out in the inning. After a chopper to third base advanced both base runners safely, Dalton Wingo (UCF) would work a full count walk to load the bases with two outs in the inning for Bruno Teramoto (New Mexico St.). Bruno would rip a 1-1 pitch down the third base line that would rattle around in the left field corner. All 3 runners would come around to score and after the top of the 4th, the Generals would lead 3-1.

Nathan Schneider worked his way through the 5th with a 3 up, 3 down, showing. However, things got a bit messy in the bottom of the 6th inning. With the Royals only down 2, the go ahead run would be brought to the plate after Schneider hit the first batter and walked the second. He would manage to get a line drive out to left field for out number one. He would then get the next hitter to hit a line drive right at the third baseman. If caught, the Gens would’ve had a double play because the Royal runners had started to run to the next base and would have been doubled off for sure. However, when the ball was booted, the Gens had their hands full with the bases loaded and one out. But just like the night before at home vs. Harrisonburg, Head Coach John Jeanes turned to the bullpen, and his reliever worked an inning ending double play to avoid the danger. This time it was newcomer Austin Hohm (Georgia Southern).

Hohm would make pretty easy work of the Winchester Royals for the rest of the game. He would go on to pick up the 11 out save by finishing out the 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th innings.

Waynesboro Falls at Winchester 3-2 in 12 Innings

wb-winchester2After losing only their second home game of the season Tuesday, the Waynesboro Generals (14-7) fell Wednesday night to the Winchester Royals (13-8) 3-2 in twelve innings.

The game ended when Winchester’s Derek Gibree drove in the winning run from second with an RBI single.

Winchester snagged the win despite being outhit by the Generals ten hits to five. The Royals also only had three different players hit safely.

Both teams remained scoreless until the top of the sixth when the Generals struck first with one run in the top of the inning. Trey Stine walked in his plate appearance and, after stealing second, scored after an RBI single by left fielder Eli Putnam.

Winchester would score in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game at one. The score would remain through the ninth inning as the teams went to extra frames to determine the victor.

Each team scored a run in the eleventh inning to extend the game further before Winchester would win in the bottom of the twelfth. Kyle Salladay drove in Putnam with a sacrifice fly after he had doubled and advanced on a sacrifice bunt earlier in the inning. Winchester scored with the same sequence of events in the bottom of the inning to respond.

Campbell Scholl turned in a terrific start for the Generals as he threw six innings, allowed only one hit, walked three, and struck out five batters. Dylan Burns pitched one inning of relief and gave up only one run. Merritt Huber tossed two scoreless innings and Tanner Kirby threw one before Zach Neff was tagged with the loss after giving up two runs, including the game winning one, in just one full inning of relief.

Cameron Fritz was credited with the win for Winchester.

UP NEXT: The Generals will be back on the road as they travel to Staunton on Thursday night to take on the Braves in a contest beginning at 7:30 pm.

Walk-Off Home Run Propels Generals Over Winchester 4-3

Tracy Hadley’s walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth gave the Generals the victory over Winchester.

A no-doubt, walk-off solo home run by Tracy Hadley in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Waynesboro Generals (10-3) their fourth straight win and a 4-3 victory over the Winchester Royals (7-6).

Hadley was appearing in his first game for the Generals, and the home run gave him his first hit of the season.

“I finally made up my mind that I was gonna sit on the fastball, I set back, and I hit it,” Hadley said of his late-game heroics in a post-game interview.

Winchester got on the board early after three straight walks to open the game by Waynesboro starting pitcher Tyler Davis loaded the bases and a sacrifice fly made the score 1-0.

The Generals struck back in the bottom of the inning, though, with three runs to claim the lead. Starting pitcher Joey Jones for the Royals also issued the three walks to open the game and loaded the bases allowing T.J. Condon to put Waynesboro ahead with a two-RBI single. After a throwing error by the second baseman on an attempted double play turn, the Generals extended their lead to 3-1.

Winchester came back to tie the game in the top of the fifth with two runs of their own. After a leadoff walk, pitcher Merritt Huber threw the ball away at first on a bunt attempt by Kevin Suarez allowing the runner to score. Suarez advanced to third and would score in the next at bat on an RBI groundout by Trevor Jensen to tie it at 3 before Hadley would end the game in the ninth.

Davis would go four innings for the Generals and, despite early struggles, limited Winchester to just one run on two hits with three strikeouts and five walks. Huber would come on in relief to pitch four innings allowing two runs, one of which was earned, on one hit with one walk and one strikeout. Zach Neff got the win after pitching the ninth inning allowing one hit with two strikeouts.

Jon Peterson was the losing pitcher for the Royals.

Royals pound Waynesboro, 11-3

The 11-3 Royals win felt a lot, lot worse.

“We hadn’t broken four bats in two weeks,” Generals coach Derek McDaniel said after the loss, which was decided early.

A three-run fourth and two-run fifth chased starter Adam Curtis (4-3), who gave up seven runs on 10 hits in four and a third innings. Read more
