Generals Fall at Home to Front Royal 7-3

generals-front-royal2The Waynesboro Generals (14-6) lost only their second home game of the season Tuesday night in a loss to the Front Royal Cardinals (12-9) 7-3.

Waynesboro put the first run on the board on a Zach Sterry sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third inning. The Cardinals did not allow the lead to last long, though, as in the top of the fourth they struck back for five runs to take a 5-1 lead. Joe Mundy’s two RBI single allowed the Cardinals to take the lead. Then, a single by Stephen Diaz, a triple by Zach Clark, and another single by Tanner Halstead all drove in runs to push the lead to four runs.

Back-to-back home runs by Clay Hunt and Josh Magee for Front Royals stretched the lead to 7-1 as the Front Royal offense carried the team in the middle innings.

The Generals would fight back scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Zach Sterry doubled down the right field line, and Trey Stine drove him in with an RBI single to get one run back. Stine would then score after an error by the third baseman making the score 7-3. The score held at that margin for the rest of the game.

Sterry had a strong game at the plate after going two for two with a double and a single on the night. The first baseman was the only Waynesboro player with more than one hit in the game.

Tyler Davis started the game on the mound for the Generals going four innings allowing five runs on five hits with only two of the runs being earned. Despite not allowing a hit in the first three innings, Davis struggled in the fourth where he gave up all of his runs. He also finished with four strikeouts and two walks finishing with the loss. Brent Sasse tossed three innings of relief and allowed two runs on six hits. Tyler Elwer and Conner Loeprich each pitched one inning of scoreless relief.

Blake Whitney got the win for Front Royal after throwing six innings, allowing three runs on five hits, striking out six, and walking three.

UP NEXT: Waynesboro will travel to Winchester tomorrow, June 29 to face the Royals beginning at 7:00 pm.
