Five Generals to Participate in Valley League All-Star Game

The Valley League All-Star rosters have been announced, and five Waynesboro Generals players will be representing the South Division on July 10th.

 

Pitchers Campbell Scholl and Ivanniel Vazquez will join the South pitching staff. Scholl leads the team in ERA with a 0.54 average in his three starts thus far. He has started three games going sixteen and two-thirds innings while only allowing one run on just five hits. His record stands at 1-0 with eleven walks and eleven strikeouts. Vazquez has appeared in relief six times for the Generals with a 1-1 record and a 2.45 ERA. In eleven innings, he has surrendered three runs with three walks and is second on the team with eighteen strikeouts.

 

Rounding out the Generals’ All-Stars are outfilders Tanner Poole and Eli Putnam along with first baseman Zach Sterry. Poole has been a dynamic player for Waynesboro at the top of the lineup while leading the team in batting average (.315), at bats (92), runs (18), hits (29), and stolen bases (14). He has also played a strong center field as Poole has not committed an error this season. Eli Putnam, despite some time spent on the disabled list, has also had a large impact offensively for the team. He is second on the team in both batting average at .303 and RBIs with fourteen. Sterry has also had an impact in the middle of the order. He leads the team and is tied for league lead with seven home runs on the season. Sterry is third on the team with a .291 batting average, and leads the team with seventeen RBIs.

 

Sterry will also participate in the Home Run Derby which is set to begin at 5:20 before the game.

 

The Valley-League All-Star Game will take place on Sunday July 10th beginning at 7:30 pm. Gates open for fans at 3:00 pm with opportunities for fans to take photos and receive autographs. The 60 yard dash contest and Home Run Derby will take place at 4:15 pm and 5:20 pm, respectively. Player introductions will begin at 7:15 pm.

Generals Stretch Winning Streak to Six Games

Alex Ernestine (Nicholls State) earned the win for the Generals by tossing 6.0 innings, giving up 8 hits, 3 earned runs and 0 walks, while striking out 5.

The Waynesboro Generals (12-3) stretched their win streak to six games and have now won twelve of their last thirteen by defeating the Charlottesville Tom Sox (6-9) 9-3 on Monday night at Linco Park. This win proved to be much less stressful coming off back-to-back walk-off wins in the previous nights.

 

The Generals received a quality start by Alex Ernestine (Nicholls State) as he went 6.0 strong innings, giving up 8 hits, 3 earned runs, and 0 walks, while striking out 5 and earning the win. Tyler Elwer (Georgia State) and Merritt Huber (Wofford) threw the final three innings in scoreless relief, while giving up 0 hits. The Generals’ pitching staff completed the night by throwing only 122 pitches and surrendering 0 walks.

 

At the plate, the Generals were led by Tracy Hadley (Southern Miss) as he went 3-4 with 1 run scored, 3 RBI’s, and 2 doubles. Zach Sterry (Oakland) finished the night 1-3 and added to his home-run total (3) by launching a solo home-run in the first inning. Tanner Poole (Mississippi State), Trey Stine (New Mexico St.) and Kyle Jackson (Elon) all had multiple hits for the Generals.

 

Waynesboro returns to action Tuesday night as they take the short trip to face the Staunton Braves (5-9) and Tyler Howe (Alabama State) will get the start.

A Sam Palensky (Nebraska-Omaha) walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning pushed across pinch-runner, Brent Sakurai (New Mexico St.), to give the Waynesboro Generals (11-3) their fifth straight win and a 4-3 victory over the New Market Rebels (6-9).

 

The Generals were led at the plate by Charles Zaloumis (St. Mary’s) as he went 2-4 with 1 run scored and Andrew Bullock (Western Carolina) as he went 1-2 with 1 run scored and 1 RBI.

 

Campbell Scholl (Central Florida) game the Generals 5.2 innings of quality work in his start as he game up 1 hit, 1 earned run and struck out 2. Tanner Kirby (Arkansas State) earned the win in 1.2 innings of relief, giving up 2 hits and 1 earned run.

 

The Generals look to continue their winning ways as they host the Charlottesville TomSox (6-8) on Monday night, 7 PM at Linco Park.
